A new film starring Desperate Housewives actress Felicity Huffman, called TransAmerica, has been showered with praise and awards that belie its unconventional, opinionated and problematic subject matter. Directed by Duncan Tucker and featuring Kevin Zegers, the story follows a male-to-female transsexual who, formerly known as Stanley, is about to embark on the last operation that will maker her into the woman she longs to be. At the last moment she is informed about a formerly unknown son she fathered when still a man, a son who’s about to be released from jail. After taking a flight to the jail in New York, Bree seizes upon the opportunity to accompany her son back to Los Angeles on the West Coast. However, afraid to reveal the truth of her identity to her son, she hides behind the character shield of a missionary from ‘The Church of the Potential Father’.
Huffman told the news agency WENN:
“We were staying in Best Western hotels and getting dressed in rat-infested buildings in the middle of nowhere, and we were happy to be there.”
“There’s a difference between doing something for money - which I certainly try to do - and something like this, where you know there’s no money and you work 24/7.”
It’s a comedy, a family story and a growing up tale all in one. Whether people go to see it because they want to laugh, to see Huffman’s performance as a woman emerging from a man or because they want to learn about Trans people, it sounds like many people will benefit from viewing. Not only is this the first film acquired by the Weinstein brothers having left the Miramax house of Disney, but it’s also the movie that has garnered Huffman a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama. I can’t wait to see it. It opens Friday the 20th January in the US, with a UK release of Friday the 10th March.
