Mr & Mrs Smith: Slated!

mrs smith

I really wanted to go see Mr & Mrs Smith because according to the trailers and highly managed clips available to the public, it looks like a fun movie with a great idea behind it. A husband and wife are assassins and are the best in their field. The twist is that they both don’t know that what the other does. When their respective bosses instruct each to kill the other, all hell breaks loose. The San Francisco Chronicle however, does not seem to see the movie in quite the same way as I do. Perhaps I’m going to have to wait and see what other people think of it before setting down my £5 for a ticket…

“Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is an awful movie with two very good-looking people in it. The charms of its stars are unmistakable — what with all the close-ups and smirking — but in the end, they provide no distraction. The tiny smidgen of cleverness on display here is contained entirely in the premise. The follow-through is nonexistent. The film is glossy, but awful. Frenetic, but awful. Expensive, but awful. … And awful.

But Jolie is wrong for the role. Pitt is engaging, despite the lack of clever dialogue to help him. But Jolie is only tough, which is the wrong essence for absurdist comedy. The joke is supposed to be that no one would expect the Smiths to be paid assassins. With Jolie, it’s not that much of a stretch. It’s more of a stretch to picture her hustling for laughs. “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” could never have been good, but it definitely called for an actress with a lighter touch, someone such as Robin Wright Penn, or Carla Gugino — or Jennifer Aniston.

    Dude,
I wouldnt bother going to see Mr and Mrs Smith. It’s an alright movie,as far as movies go, but it’s not really as slick as it could be and you leave the cineam feeling like you had some good fun in there, but it wast really worth the money. Jolie and Pitt have good screen chemistry, but the story is a bit holey, and i think the parts could have been better acted. Me and a friend were discussing this and we think he plays parts better when he is a bit actor and not the star. I mean, when u go and see brad pitt in a movie you expect it to be pretty good, but it just wasnt, disappointingly:(
That said, after seeing m+m smith, my friend and i sneaked into see sin city which was very good. Its in a totally different league than the smiths, and you prob coudnt categorise it at all, but what it does, it does well. Its filmed in a comic book stylee where only a few things are in colour. It’s quite graphic too- in terms of violence, and can be a bit scary, but it is really good:0 defo better than the other one.
Anyway, hope you’re well. I left a voice msg on your mob saying thankyou for the theatre vouchers but i dinna know if you got it. If not Thankyou so much my lovely baby brother!! It’s the best bday present ever:))

    Love, ROisin xxx
