With it being Good Friday today, the majority of this country has the day off as it’s a Bank Holiday. We’re all supposed to think of godly things and be good Christians; Christians with a capital E for Evangelical. Anyway, in my family’s bid to remain cultural and interested in the city, we went, with the families of some of my father’s colleagues, to Symphony Hall. Aptly enough, what a coincidence, they were performing St Matthew’s Passion, Bach’s 2 1/2 hour rendition of the crucifixion of Christ, but without the blood and gore that Mel Gibson threw at his film version.
The performance was impressive, loud, solemn and long, but what’s notable here was not the performance but what followed. We leave the concert hall, say our goodbyes to friends and return home. It is shortly discovered by my mother that the BBC Radio is broadcasting a performance from London, of… St Matthew’s Passion. My parents sat down to listen.
Unbelievable.
