Future of Shakespeare

Levi’s showing a new advertisement on their EU website that reportedly mimics the traditional scenes of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” but in a modern, LA setting. I can’t wait – especially since I can now watch a video of the making of the video! It’s all just getting too much – I used to be enthralled by ‘making of’ additions but if every single ad out there that is looking for an audience of movers and shakers has a ‘making of’ then it degrades the concept; especially when the product is digusting to look at, ill fitting and badly made. I’m not a fan of the old Levi and yet they continue to send me their promotional material emails.

“Shot at night, in downtown Los Angeles, the advert takes some elements from recent 501® Jeans ads; west coast settings, dialogue, antifit/form hero, but takes them to a new place by using the words of William Shakespeare. It’s a modern day love story that’s unlike anything else you’re likely to see on TV… Welcome to the future, Shakespeare!”

Pieces in a modern style: translation between Shakespeare’s words and Levi’s interpretation

  • I see their knavery: this is to make an ass of me.
  • I can see what they’re up to, trying to freak me about my jeans
  • Thou art changed! What do I see on thee?
  • You look different. What sort of weird ass jeans are you wearing?

  1. fantastic, totally love the ad and have recorded it so i can watch it when i want, wasn’t too happy though when the ad was shortened it takes the shine off it really. SHOW THE AD MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Well, I’ve never seen it: I don’t watch enough TV on TV to actually see that many supposedly ‘hip’ ads. And also, they never seem to run the Levi ads all that much, kind of relying on word-of-mouth to get them publicised and noticed.
Just from watching it online though, I think it’s pretty cool. Having said that, they do tend to hype their own intelligence over the top. There’s no need to be a pedant when what they’re doing isn’t all that original to begin with.
